Junior Design
Design 2021
While it is a separate curriculum area, Visual Communication Design is incorporated into our visual arts classes undertaken by students in junior classes before then splitting into two distinct subjects at the senior level. The design focussed units that junior students have immersed themselves in this year have been presented across both face-to-face classes and in remote learning.
Design allows for a lot of creative and design thinking to be employed, as well as adhering to specific technical drawing conventions such as grids and scaling, perspective or isometric drawing, all of these explored by Year 7 students, Year 8 students and Year 9 students respectively.
Another benefit of design, particularly in a remote setting, is that students have been able to test out and engage with new technologies. TINKERCAD has been a wonderful digital application allowing students to build and craft designs in 3D, developing an understanding of not only spacial awareness and precise measurements, but how products and structures translate from 2D sketches into 3D designs - a key skill for any budding industrial designer or engineer.
